What's A Scone?
Scones are a Scottish pastry who's name is taken from the Stone of Destiny (or Scone),
the place where Scottish kings were once crowned.  Light and flaky, they are similar in
texture to an American biscuit, but moist, lightly sweet and incredibly flavorful.  They
can be eaten plain or with Devonshire or clotted cream, lemon curd and jams.

In 1998 Anne  received a book as birthday gift that would, unknowingly, change her life.
In this book was a recipe for scones, but she found them to be too dry and crumbly.
After much research and many attempts, she found a blend that captured the true
essence of a real traditional scone.  The new recipe was tested and approved by various
English, Scottish, Irish and Canadian friends.  In fact, the Grand Rapids Scottish Society
praised the scones from their local paper.

Tony Hernandez was the one who put Anne’s desire to start a business into action.  In
November of 2003, The Sconery was open for business in Holland, Michigan.  Initially
the operation was only for wholesale production; selling to local coffee shops, hospitals,
colleges and resorts.  After a spot on local television news, however, the demand for a
retail shop was overwhelming.

The Sconery then moved to Grand Rapids, MI into the Woodland Mall.  This allowed for
both the retail and wholesale venues of the company to grow and develop.  After about 6
months there, however The Sconery grew out of the small shop.
A larger facility that had been a bread bakery was available and The Sconery moved two
blocks to the final Michigan location on East Paris.  Here The Sconery grew and
conformed into a wonderful bakery/tearoom/café/espresso bar with a nice seating area
including soft seating, and an internet bar with free wifi and outlets.  Afternoon tea
became a specialty, and many area businesses knew that they had a delicious and healthy
breakfast and lunch stop nearby.

Unfortunately, the economic winds changed which caused many local businesses to lay
off personnel and many even closed.  This downward turn caused the end of the first
chapter of The Sconery; and after almost two years of hard work, sometimes Tony and
Anne working around the clock, The Sconery closed its doors.

Then in 2007, Tony and Anne moved from Michigan to Florida.  Here, a new chapter of
The Sconery began.  This time Tony was inspired to sell scones in local farmers markets
in Central Florida.  This allowed there to be “stores” in many different locations without
the overhead of “brick and mortar” restaurants.  Within months of testing the retail
market in this manner, people approached Tony wanting to be a part of The Sconery in
other Florida farmers markets.  Inspired by this opportunity, The Sconery began setting
up as a manufacturer/distributor allowing potential vendors to, once meeting Federal,
State, local and Company requirements, set up their own booths for The Sconery.
After some research and quite a
few attempts,  I found a blend
that captured the true essence of
a traditional English scone.
Get Thee To The Sconery!
